Katipunan Trees Are Gone

4 Comments » // February 24th, 2009

Katipunan AvenueKatipunan Avenue changes its looks yet again as the MMDA takes out the huge trees on the islands along this busy street.  The trees were previously located in the “street islands” in front of the Ateneo/McDonald’s area up to the ones in front of Yellow Cab at the FBR building.  I think the trees on the island that stretches from the Miriam College/Metrobank area up to the Shoppersville area are also gone as well.

Goodbye trees and goodbye islands (and goodbye parking space?).  I bet balikbayans or returning visitors or alumnae will get more confused the next time they visit Katipunan.  All that is left are patches of rubble that used to make up the islands, some traffic signs and plastic orange barricade on the island perimiter.  I wonder what the MMDA will do next.

Hi, just saw your website while browsing as to where to eat along Katipunan. Then I saw your post about the trees along Katipunan being gone. Maybe you could feature on your website the planned SM condominium beside Petron Katipunan. It plans to erect a 31-story on that side of Katipunan.

Councilor Belmonte wants to change the zoning ordinance in order to accommodate the building.

It’s just plain wrong. Maybe we could all join those opposing it by signing the on the signature campaign.

Let’s not turn our beloved Katipunan into another development disaster fueled by those who just wants more profit. Why can’t our Katipunan be more of a Harvard university town?

    Just my thoughts.

Alumni of Ateneo and UP, Katipunero forever.

Katipunan is so so different now. Months ago, I remember walking there under the heat of the sun…running from shade to shade…there were trees then. And now…this. I hate to see Katipunan being turned into a victim of modernization. I guess this is what happens when leaders try to act so tough, they completely lose their hearts.

I also heard news from a friend that they really replant the trees… with the roots and all. I hope they tagged the trees and took pics so we’d really see what happened. We can find out where the trees went to also.
